REVIEW: Andrew Graham-Dixon - The Sistine Chapel, Chichester
Published Date:
13 July 2008
In a thought-provoking lecture on the Sistine Chapel, leading art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon revealed layers of meaning within the vast painted sky.
The talk illustrated the originality and sophistication of Michelangelo's theological ideas as he created this extraordinary fresco five hundred years ago.
Describing it as "a work of divine poetry", Andrew gave an account of the physical processes and techniques used by Michelangelo to create his awe-inspiring masterpiece, which took four years to complete. He also discussed a selection of the legends taken from the Book of Genesis which appear in the painted scenes, including a moving and intriguing interpretation of The Creation of Adam.
Reminding us that " images can become so familiar people don't look at them", he persuaded us to re-examine not only the subject matter but the structure and sequence of the paintings themselves.
Andrew undoubtedly inspired the audience to buy his book, which is bound to be a runaway success.
