REVIEW: Maggi Hambling in conversation with Philip Jackson, Old Kitchen, Bishop's Palace.
Published Date:
11 July 2008
The Old Kitchen was packed on Tuesday evening to hear controversial and prolific artist Maggi Hambling in conversation with sculptor Philip Jackson.
Philip's comprehensive introduction and questions proved to be the perfect foil for Maggi's virtuouso performance. Chronicling her extraordinary career, from early beginnings in the school art room making the discovery "you don't have to try at all and then you're good at it", she captivated the audience and paid homage to the people who helped to shape her work.
The talk was centred around a breathtaking selection of slides which enabled us to more fully appreciate the extraordinary range of Maggi's work which included ink drawings, bronze sculpture (including the infamous Scallop celebrating Benjamin Britten) ceramics and paintings.
A frank, funny and deeply moving insight into the life and work of a remarkable artist. Maggi Hambling is irresistible, irrepressible and utterly inspiring.
