Published Date: 08 July 2008
As torrential rain poured over Chichester on Tuesday evening, historian and broadcaster Michael Wood swept us away on an evocative, sensuous journey to the heart of the living ancient civilisation that is South India today.
Using rich, visual language he spoke with enthusiasm, energy and humour to give more than a tantalising taste of the flavour of this dynamic country, which inspired him to make the BBC series The Story of India.
Passionate about the marrying of ancient traditions and modern culture,
Michael shared with the audience his favourite journey across Southern India, from Kerala, heading east and crossing the Ghats to Tamil Nadu, where he explored the cities of Madurai and Thanjavur.

Earthy, at times lyrical, always utterly engaging, Michael offered an extraordinary glimpse into a unique, highly independent country, "the last ancient civilization alive on the earth today … where the past is still alive in the present".

Ms Steyn paints as evocative a picture of her evening listening to Mr. Wood as it appears Mr. Wood did for her about India. I will make a point of watching The Story of India as a result.
