BLONDIE drummer Clem Burke and a University of Chichester lecturer have teamed up to research the physical effects of a drum kit used in a popular video game.
The drummer and the principal lecturer in exercise physiology, Dr Marcus Smith, are researching how lifelike the new Guitar Heroes World Tour video game is.
The game, which uses a controller drum kit to re-create the feeling of being in a band, w
ill be analysed in the following year.
Dr Smith said: "We've been extremely impressed by the Guitar Hero World Tour drum controller.
"The Clem Burke project is all about promoting the benefits of drumming, and we're convinced those who learn the basics of the instrument with Guitar Hero World Tour can use those skills when progressing to an actual full drum kit.
"No other gaming controller comes close to simulating the experience of drumming.
"Anecdotally, we believe Guitar Hero World Tour is a perfect introduction to the instrument – and we can't wait to examine this scientifically and unveil our findings throughout 2009."
Earlier this year the pair revealed the findings of a decade-long project which found drummers have a similar heart-rate profile and expend more calories in a set than a professional footballer would in a 90-minute game.
