Teenagers could be forced to miss entering a popular international dance competition in 2009 if they can't generate enough financial backing for this year's entry.
Manhood Community College Youth Wing has entered Global Rock Challenge, an anti-drugs dance event, for the past six years and in 2007 came third overall from around ten schools in the south of England.
The school also scooped two awards for the best video performance and originality.
But its future entry hangs in the balance after a lack of local financial backing, despite a heartfelt plea from volunteers to more than 40 businesses in the area in November.
Volunteer Lindsey Ruff said local sponsorship had been good in the past but to date the group had only received two donations towards this year’s entry costs.
“We did receive £500 from the Selsey Firework Association which was gratefully received but this competition costs an average of £2,000 to £3,000, which covers the costs of entrance fee, staging, lorry and coach hire, as well as the essential costumes and make-up,” she said.
“The youth tutor Keith Martin, the volunteer dance tutors from Chichester University, myself and my friend take charge of the costumes, and invest a great deal of time and effort in taking approximately 80 children off the streets one night every week, from September right through to April.
“It would be heartwarming to know that is acknowledged with the support of the local community, but at present we feel a little let down by this lack of response.
“If we do not receive a positive response before the competition final in April, this could well be the last year we are able to commit to this worthwhile project.”
Teenagers performed a dance based on the abolition of slavery last year and are currently preparing their entry for this year’s event in the theme of a big Broadway spectacular.
A short documentary of last year’s entry was broadcast on the Teacher TV channel and the school is in talks with national TV which is also interested in running it.
n Anyone wishing to help is urged to contact Keith Martin at the youth wing on 01243 602767. Cheques made payable to Manhood Youth Wing can also be sent to Mr Martin c/o Manhood Community College, School Lane, Selsey PO20 9EH.
