Is there anybody there? Is there life beyond the grave?

Whatever your spiritual beliefs, there is no doubt something spooky is residing in the Observer offices.
In the week before Halloween, we invited a paranormal activity group to investigate our Chichester offices at Unicorn House, which have a well-documented history of being haunted.

With tales of full apparitions, objects moving inexplicably and bad smells, I thought we would definitely come across something with the help of Paranormal 1968, a spiritual activity group based in Bognor Regis.

Several hours of patiently waiting in the dark and calling for signs of activity among other techniques proved fruitless – but for two very strange occurrences and an eerie noise picked up by an MP3 player.

It would be easy to dismiss what happened as just a coincidence if you were not actually involved. But believe me, it was all very real.

While we were holding a vigil in a first-floor office, and calling for a spirit to show itself by any means possible, two computer screens simultaneously turned themselves on.

The second incident involved a technique called automatic writing, where members of the group clear their minds and let whatever spirit is in the room take control of a pen and write.

Two members of the group sitting in opposite sides of the room came up with the same name and the same numbers – Lawrence and 46.

Within the first 20 minutes of the six hours of recorded noise, you can clearly hear someone crying. Unless a colleague had some work to catch up on in the middle of the night, I'd say we had a visitor from beyond the grave.

With mixed results from the first part in our Halloween hunt for ghosts, I will be visiting Cowdray Ruins in Midhurst on Saturday (November 1) night looking for more spiritual activity.
