COUNTRYSIDE walkers and picnickers are being urged not to make life easy for thieves by leaving valuables on show in their unattended vehicles.

The warning from Sussex police comes after reports a number of women's handbags had been stolen from beauty spot car parks after being left on show.

Areas targeted include Petworth, Eartham and Stansted parks, Hunter's Race and Kingley Vale.

A police spokesperson said reports of the crime had recently reduced as a result of patrols by officers and residents being more security conscious.

But they are continuing to warn residents to be on their guard.

"Whilst the weather remains fine, Sussex police would remind members of the public of the following: Don't leave any valuables in your car, unless unavoidable.

"If it does become necessary to leave valuable items in your vehicle, ensure they are placed in the boot and out of sight prior to parking in the beauty spot car parks.

"It is believed that thieves are watching people 'hide' their valuables and therefore know which vehicles to target. Don't be caught out."
