Soup, beans and sausages – here are a few of my favourite tins
I am a man who thinks with his stomach. No matter what challenges I face, everything becomes more agreeable when I have a tummy full of scoff.
So I am always keen to discover the next foodie fad. The latest craze in the USA is a 'Candwich' and, refreshingly, it actually does what it says on the tin.
To create this culinary wonder, food technicians placed a hot dog roll in a vacuum-packed beer can. Fillings include BBQ beef, pepperoni pizza, cinnamon roll or peanut and jelly. It has a long shelf life and the creators say it will eventually launch in the UK with a variety of regional fillings.
I cannot wait! I adore food in tins!
I love those tins of beans and mini-pork sausages, while a tin of mackerel fillets eaten straight from the metal with a fork is simply divine. Tomato soup on a cold winter's night, decanted straight from the can into a mug, and blasted in the microwave? Mmm!
To misquote The Sound of Music, these are a few of my favourite tins.
You can get anything in a tin these days. Aside from the 'Candwich', fish, vegetables, curry, wine, gin and tonic, coffee, milk and fruit all offer long-life and convenience.
I was recently sent a book that contained the work of a writer called Vincent Mulchrone. Vincent was a genius old hack who spent most of his career writing for the Daily Mail.
One Mulchrone piece was about his preference for tinned pineapple chunks over fresh fruit. There was predictable outrage, but also a sizeable amount of support for his point of view. I wonder if, in today's organic times, tinned food still has its supporters?
I only ask as I have hit upon an idea to conduct a week-long experiment: to eat nothing unless it comes out of a tin.
I can cover the main meals easily; all I need to do is to make sure I have my tin opener handy. My booze consumption should also remain on par.
While I probably would not risk wine in a tin, plenty of good ale is to be found in a four-pack.
Before I conduct my experiment, I would be grateful if any readers could suggest some tinned delicacies that might not be on my radar. If you have a guilty pleasure when it comes to tinned food, then please let me know.
