Special service for Royal Naval Service in Chichester
MEMBERS of the Chichester branch of the Royal Naval Association gathered for a special service at Chichester Cathedral this month to bless its new standard.
Around 70 people, including members from other branches in the area, attended the service.
Once repairs have taken place to the cathedral’s Royal Naval Chapel, the old standard will be hung inside.
Following the 45-minute service, members gathered for lunch, providing a chance for them to catch up.
Member Jim Austin said: “We had a good turnout and the service went down well.”
The Chichester branch has a long history. It was formed at the Ritz (now the Park Tavern) on September 30, 1947, with the first standard dedicated on September 4, 1949.
The Royal Naval Chapel in the cathedral was dedicated on July 3, 1956, a special occasion attended by the Queen and Prince Philip. The second standard was dedicated on June 29, 1958.
