THE DRIVER of a car destroyed in a crash on the A259, in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, July 2) is "lucky to be alive."
It happened at 2.05am, at the Tesco roundabout, when the Mercedes, worth in excess of £40,000 and travelling from Worthing towards Bognor, left the road and smashed into a lamp post.
The impact was such that the engine was ripped open, leaving the carriageway covered in around 5 litres of fuel.
Fire and Rescue teams from Littlehampton and East Preston spent 45 minutes making the road and the car safe, but the man was out of the car by the time they arrived.
Niall Cooper, station commander at Littlehampton Fire Station, said the driver had been lucky to escape from the crash unharmed.
