A MAJOR route north from the Littlehampton area, the A280 Long Furlong, is having to be resurfaced following a crash between a motorbike, a lorry and several cars this morning (Friday, May 16, 2008).
The crash, just before 8am, damaged the lorry's diesel tank, causing 300 litres of the fuel to spill onto the road.
Police closed Long Furlong in both directions between the junction with the A24 at School Hill, Findon, and the A27 Patching inter
section, causing traffic chaos.
Highways staff from the county council then set about clearing the diesel and covering any remnants with sand.
But this afternoon a spokesman from the county council said: "The diesel has affected the road surface to such an extent that it has to be resurfaced.
"This is going to be undertaken as soon as possible, maybe this evening. Therefore the road will remain closed, possibly until early tomorrow morning (Saturday, May 17)."
Following the crash, police, a fire crew from Findon and the ambulance service were called to the scene.
A 24-year-old man was taken by ambulance to Worthing Hospital with what police described as serious but not life-threatening injuries.
