SHOCK and sympathy has been expressed following the tragic death of a Horsham refuse collector.

The man, in his 30s, died at the scene following a collision with a refuse collection vehicle at around 9.20am in Andrews Road, Southwater.

Liz Kitchen (Con, Rusper), leader of Horsham District Council, said:
"It is with the greatest sadness that I can confirm that a member of Horsham District Council's refuse collection team was killed whilst at work in the Southwater area this morning (May 15).

"This is a tremendous shock to everyone and our deepest sympathies go to his family and colleagues.

"Full details of the incident are being investigated and we are assisting the police and Health & Safety Executive with their enquiries."

Police have closed the road while investigations continue.
