A CONTROVERSIAL development which will transform household waste into energy has been given the go-ahead.

Surrey County Council approved blueprints for the Capel Energy from Waste (EfW) facility at a planning meeting.

Surrey's decision to build a plant to burn household rubbish comes just weeks after West Sussex County Council announced plans for a massive waste recycling plant at Brookhurst Wood in Langhurstwood Road, near Warnham.

West Sussex rejected incineration in favour of a bio-mechanical treatment for all of the county's rubbish.

This week's decision now means that the bulk of rubbish from two counties will be handled by plants a few miles apart on the West Sussex-Surrey border.

However, Surrey's decision could be overturned in January when a pressure group takes its case to the High Court.

More information about the facility can be found at www.surreywaste.co.uk/efw/capel.
