HENFIELD charity fundraisers have retrieved a £700 bike which was stolen shortly after the London to Brighton cycling event.

A team from The White Hart pub, in the village's High Street, entered the famous bike ride and it was a team member's bike which was stolen from a garage.

Quick-thinking team member Russell Pelling, 46, heard youths discussing selling the bike in Henfield High Street on the afternoon of Saturday June 21.

"I recognised the bike straight away," he said.

"I told the lad I would give him £200 for it - but I would have to go home for the money.

"Together with another team member we confronted the youngsters and called the police.

"The serial number on the receipt exactly matched that on the bike so there was no mistake."

A male youth in possession of the bike was arrested and has been released on police bail.

The White Hart team raised more than £1,000 for the British Heart Foundation in the London to Brighton ride.
