ART: Children's work on show at museum
Pots and sculptures made by children are on show at Chichester district museum during the first two weeks of July.
The ceramic artwork is now being displayed until Wednesday, July 15, in the museum's temporary gallery.
Youngsters from Chichester and the surrounding area made the pots and sculptures during a special Clay Day.
Two local ceramic artists worked with them to produce four examples of ceramic art – a thrown pot, a sculpture, a coil pot and a pinch pot.
Thrown pottery, made on a potter's wheel, is a technique that dates back 5,000 years. It is commonly used to make plates, vases and bowls.
The children worked under expert guidance from Malcolm Fieldhouse, ex-head of art at St Philip Howard Catholic High School.
Sculpture artist Chris Letts helped them to make their own sculpture using terracotta, or 'red', clay. Birds, dogs and even a dragon appeared over the course of the afternoon.
Mr Letts will be exhibiting at the Oxmarket Centre of Arts in the first two weeks of September.
Examples of Celtic coil pottery have been found throughout the Chichester district, as have pinch pots.
Both of these types of pottery are commonly found with fingerprints embedded in the work. After the two-week display, the children will be collecting their work to take home.
Chichester District Museum will be holding more clay days in 2010.
