ENTERTAINMENT: Torchwood star John Barrowman pays a visit to Arundel Castle
THE star of BBC's Torchwood took a historical trip back in time when he was given a guided tour of Arundel Castle.
He was at the historic home of the Dukes of Norfolk to promote An Evening With John Barrowman, his up-coming appearance at the town's festival, which promises to be an all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza.
"I love the fact that it is a living castle, in that the family still live here," he said, "I also love that it looks great, and I am not just looking at a pile of dust and rubble.
"I am very interested in history, but it is my partner, Scott Gill, who loves architecture."
It was only on arriving at the castle gates that morning that he realised that he had, in fact, performed there before.
"It was many years ago when I was just starting out, and I was travelling with Bonnie Langford. She was playing here and she asked me to do a couple of numbers with her, which I did!
"It's strange! I travel along the A27 a lot and when I pass the castle I always look and think it looks great."
John, 42, was born in Glasgow, though moved to the United States when he was a boy.
He is best known as Captain Jack Harkness in Dr Who and Torchwood, as well as for appearances on many prime time shows, such as How to Solve a Problem like Maria, but he also tours the country with a one-man show.
"I can't chose between my stage work and my television work. I am entertainer; that's what I was made to do, put on this planet to do.
"I just enjoy every facet of it."
Asked what fans could expect from his Arundel show, at the castle on August 22, he said even he was not too sure.
"I do know what songs I will sing, but apart from that I just go with the flow when I am on stage.
"Most people who come to see my shows say that is what they love about them."
John and his band will take to the stage at 7.30pm, and there will be a firework finale at 10.30pm.
