ENTERTAINMENT: Winter season unveiled at Chichester Festival Theatre

Penelope Keith is reunited with her To The Manor Born co-star Peter Bowles in The Rivals in Chichester Festival Theatre's winter season.

Directed by Peter Hall, Richard Brinsley Sheridan's comic tour de force opens the season in the Festival Theatre from November 1-6.

The season will also explore the triumphs and tragedies in the life and career of opera diva Maria Callas in Master Class by Terrence McNally, starring Stephanie Beacham and directed by Chichester's artistic director Jonathan Church from November 22-27.

Also in the main-house will be The History Boys, Alan Bennett's portrayal of a group of sixth-formers attempting to gain entrance to Oxbridge (January 19-29). School life is also depicted in the classic comedy Teechers, written and directed by John Godber which plays in the Minerva Theatre from November 30-December 4.

Kneehigh revive their award-winning production of The Red Shoes from November 2-6 in the Minerva Theatre, featuring a desperate heroine who can't stop dancing.

Again in the Minerva, Frantic Assembly and the National Theatre of Scotland co-produce Beautiful Burnout from November 16-27. Written by Bryony Lavery, the play is a powerful piece of physical theatre about a young boxer.

The Carl Rosa Opera company returns from November 15-20 with the Gilbert & Sullivan favourite, HMS Pinafore.

As usual, Christmas is celebrated with a week of Christmas Concerts featuring The Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines, Portsmouth and Chichester Cathedral Choir from November 29-December 4, compiled and presented by actor and director Philip Franks. There is also festive fare from folk singer Maddy Prior whose Carols And Capers will be performed on Thursday, December 9.

The festivities will culminate in a new musical adaptation of Alice In Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass, staged by Chichester Festival Youth Theatre from December 18-January 1.

A Chichester Festival Theatre production of Goodnight Mister Tom, the classic children's novel, adapted by Chichester's David Wood and directed by Chichester associate Angus Jackson, opens at Chichester from February 2-5 prior to a national tour.

Children's shows for under-sevens include The Bug and The Butterfly (November 13), Laura's Star (January 22) and Mole In The Hole (February 8-12).

There is also music from Roots Around The World including The Master Drummers Of Africa (October 29), The Yoruba Women's Choir (October 30), Eric Bibb (November 8), Three Bonzos and A Piano (December 7), Otros Aires (January 15), Fairport Convention (February 8) and The Celtic Footprint Festival (February 11-13).

For-one-night-only performances include Admission: One Shilling, the uplifting story of wartime National Gallery concerts by Myra Hess, brought to life by award-winning Chichester actress Patricia Routledge and pianist Piers Lane (January 29), Hanging Hooke, the intriguing story of a 17th-century English Renaissance man (November 12), comedian Sean Lock (December 7) In Conversation With… featuring novelist Jack Higgins (October 28), and Pam Ayres – 30th Anniversary Tour (November 7).
