GALLERY: Flat Five runners enjoy perfect conditions in Fishbourne

Glorious sunshine and perfect conditions greeted runners taking part in the Fishbourne Flat Five.

The annual event attracted 132 runners of all ages and abilities, who enjoyed the picturesque route which took in the kissing gates, the harbour wall and boardwalks.

As well as individual runners, the event was also open to groups, and several families took part in a walk which followed the same route around the harbour.

A new course record was set by the indomitable James Baker, who completed the event in a breathtaking 27min 19secs and for the second time, Sarah Fenmore-Collins was the first woman home, with a time of 35mins 37secs.

The fancy dress competition was won by Hollie and Hogan O'Dowda and Alice and Rosie Leeming with their full-size television screens with images of the Simpsons and a large cardboard remote control.

After all the runners had crossed the finish line and regained their breath, everyone enjoyed a barbecue at the Fishbourne Club, with a stall provided by the Apuldram Centre.

This year's event was held to raise money for the centre, which provides training opportunities for people with learning difficulties, and a total of 1,250 was raised through the race, which will go towards building new residential accommodation.

Organisers said the event had been a huge success and thanked all the marshals and helpers who made the day run smoothly.

Thanks also went to Game, Set and Match, the Chichester Runners, the Woolpack Inn and the Fishbourne Club for their support.

People are already looking ahead to next year's event which organisers hope will be bigger and better.
