MUSIC: Big Jim's evening is still going ahead – but without Big Jim...

Chichester Jazz Club's Big Jim Sullivan evening for the Chichester Festivities will go ahead – minus Big Jim Sullivan.

Club spokesman Barry Boyce explains: "Chichester Jazz Club booked the Big Jim Sullivan Trio to play on Tuesday as part of the Festivities.

"Unfortunately, because of on-going health issues, Big Jim Sullivan was unable to guarantee to perform at the concert.

"Big Jim is a great favourite at CJC where over the years his bands (duos, trios, and quartets) have delighted record audiences. His bands cover a wide range of music: mainly jazz and swing standards, with the music of Django Reinhardt and Duke Ellington being particularly to the fore.

"Inevitably the band's music also shows occasional traces of Big Jim's early career as a session musician, when he played on more than 1,000 chart hits.

"CJC and the band agreed the concert should go ahead in Big Jim's absence, with a quartet rather than a trio and performing the same repertoire as the Big Jim Sullivan Trio.

"Nils Solberg on guitar and George Trebar on bass will be joining the two remaining BJS Trio members, Doug Pruden on guitar and Al Stewart on saxophone and clarinet, and will play under the name of the DNA Quartet – a name derived from the initials of Doug, Nils and Al!"

Barry added: "Doug Pruden has been the rock-solid rhythmic driver of the various BJS groups since 2003. He is also a guitar teacher.

"Al Stewart works widely in the south and is perhaps best known for his work with the BJS trios and quartets.

"A frequent performer in BJS trios and quartets, Nils Solberg's professional career of more than 30 years has embraced gypsy jazz, traditional, swing, and mainstream jazz. From 1999 to 2001 he recorded and toured the world with Bryan Ferry's band. Later he worked in Clare Teal's band, playing on her first three CDs."

George Trebar began playing the bass at the age of 12, discovering jazz in his 20s. Since then he has played many kinds of jazz, both in the UK and overseas. Perhaps his greatest success has been in the field of gipsy jazz, including as leader of his own trio, Rhythme Futur.

The concert will take place at the Pallant Suite, South Pallant, Chichester PO19 1SY, starting at 7.30pm with doors open at 6.30pm. Bar open all evening. Tickets cost 10 from the Chichester Festivities box office on 01243 780192. For other queries, call 01243 781466.
