MUSIC: Little's large horizons
Jonathan Little, senior lecturer in music at the University of Chichester, has won a third successive prestigious award for concert music composition from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) in New York.
The award for 2008/09, made by an independent panel of distinguished American music personalities, will help Jonathan to record and release further works in his epic, multi-tableaux Greek mythological orchestral series, The Nine Muses.
Aimed at pushing back the boundaries of contemporary orchestral colour, one or more of these nine symphonic portraits will appear on his second major international album in 2009/10. He is currently working with independent record company, PARMA Recordings (USA.
The recording of the initial work in the Nine Muses cycle – Terpsichore, the Whirler or Muse of Dance – was jointly sponsored by the Kenneth Leighton Trust (UK) and the Foundation for New Music (USA), and released on Dilute Recordings (UK) in late 2007.
Terpsichore and other chamber and vocal works also appear in America on the ERM label in the Masterworks Of The New Era series (Vols 3, 5, 8, 10 and 11), featuring the Czech and Kiev Philharmonic Orchestras. These recordings were released between 2004 and 2007 and led to the award of the composer's previous two ASCAP concert music prizes.
