REVIEW: Books for the kiddies

Books for 0-5 years

My Mum by Anthony Browne

A lovely board book (a companion title for My Dad by the same author), this is ideal for children developing word recognition. A perfect quickie bedtime read – with mummy of course! – it's an affectionate celebration of your special mum. With plenty for little ones to identify with, as well as some delightful silliness.

The Bear Under the Stairs by Helen Cooper

A useful book for children with irrational fears, Bear Under the Stairs has a positive message and beautiful illustrations. 'A bit scary, mummy,' was Lily's verdict on first reading, but she then proceeded to ask for it at every bedtime for a week, so clearly more appealing with repetition.

Knight Time by Jane Clarke and Jane Massey

Claiming to be: 'A bedtime book filled with lots of surprises,' the boast is not idle. With fun lift-the-flap opportunities on each page, this book gets children challenging preconceived fears, while highlighting the difference in spelling between 'knight' and 'night.' Reassuring and hugely entertaining, Knight Time is a super addition to any child's bookshelf.

Tiger Ways by Kes Gray and Nick Sharratt

Catching up with Daisy, a great favourite with boys and girls alike, Tiger Ways is an imagination-firing hoot. With the added bonus of Daisy finger puppets for children to re-enact the story themselves, Jack Beechwhistle needs to look out if he doesn't want to be covered in ketchup and eaten by a tiger!

Dewdrop Babies – The Summer Party by Patricia MacCarthy

Grown-ups may find this a tad twee but little girls will be in sparkly heaven, thanks to the glittery illustrations and cute characters. A tale of teamwork and friendship, Lily loved the Dewdrops and quickly chose her favourites, according to their sparkle factor!

Katie Price's Mermaids and Pirates - Let's Play I Spy

With good production values this is a board book that allows you to guide your child's finger over the fingertrail to help them play I Spy. Claiming to be suitable for children of all abilities, although she liked the pictures, Lily was somewhat indifferent to the concept, finding it more enjoyable to play the game independently of the book.

Biscuit Bear by Mini Grey

A previous Smarties Book Prize Gold winner, this is a book and CD combo that will not fail to delight. As sweet as chocolate and caramel covered shortbread, the antics of Biscuit Bear provides thrills, spills (literally!) and a reassuring happy ending, this is a book that will be asked for time and time again.

Books for 5-7 years

Princess Poppy – The Birthday by Janet Louise Jones

Complete with an animated DVD this popular series for little girls was a winner with wanna-be princess, four-year-old Lily. Divinely pretty illustrations by Veronica Vasylenko coupled with a sweet story about the agony of waiting for birthdays to happen; at 6.99 this is a real bargain.

Evil Weasel by Hannah Shaw

Evil Weasel is a thoroughly nasty fellow. Revelling in the misfortunes of others, and never saying sorry for his endless rotten turns, this loathsome rogue gives readers the moral high ground and offers up a cautionary tale into the bargain. Finally seeing the light of goodness, Weasel mends his ways – or has he? Terrific fun and with brilliantly bonkers illustrations, this book provoked a great discussion between Lily and I about being kind to your friends.

Sadie the Air Mail Pilot by Kelly Strm

Boasting fantastically thrilling illustrations, can tiger Sadie the flying postie get the Air Mail Service through storms and engine failure, safely there and back home again? A great yarn for little literature lovers; this is also a great introduction to the early days of flight.
