REVIEW: Cinderella, Kings Theatre, Southsea, until January 4.

The search is over. The perfect panto has been found, alive and well and playing to whipped-up noisily-happy audiences in Southsea.

Cinderella at the Kings is a pantomime which gets absolutely everything right, delivered by a cast who are having as much fun on stage as we are in the auditorium.

It's rare that you see a company that so visibly delights in each other's company, but this lot do, playing off each other in a spirit of good, clean fun. Fluffed lines are turned to everyone's advantage in a performance which is a joy from first to last - always professional, always bright and just so infectiously enjoyable.

The point is that the Kings is such a great panto venue. The delight is that in this one it has got the kind of panto it deserves, one which hits the ground running with an upbeat dance number and never lets you go until the end, keeping the pace up nicely through all manner of gags, costumes and tried-and-tested formulae.

Star of the show is CBBC's Simon Grant, a complete natural on stage, immensely likeable and superb at keeping the audience with him every step of the way.

Syd Little, possibly slightly under-used, also impresses, as does Tamara Wall as Cinderella, giving the role a bit of spark. Michael Fordred and Paul Critchlow are wonderful as the ugly sisters, mean, bitchy and outrageously dressed.

Charlene Tilton, late of Dallas, does her best amid all the nonsense; and Jason Lee Scott as Prince Charming brings plenty of life to a role which so often appears dull.

Throughout, the singing is excellent, the songs well chosen and the dancing vibrant and fun - and on Saturday night, cast and audience were a marriage made in heaven.

The atmosphere was great - a lovely reminder just why panto still has such a part to play in our popular culture. We need it more than ever this year. And Southsea wins hands down. It's the place to be this Christmas.
