REVIEW: The Bach Choir and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Chichester Cathedral.
Superb music conducted by the composer and performed by a world-famous choir and musicians from the UK's top orchestra - concerts do not come better this one.
The Gloria, conducted by John Rutter, was a vibrant, triumphant and exuberant performance. It was an amazing combination of organ, choir and the wind and brass soloists of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra producing a spine-tingling sound – easily the best Gloria that I have ever heard.
The full-bodied tone of the Bach choir gave immaculate precision in this rich and rare interpretation where each choral line came across full of meaning.
Another Rutter composition, Cantus for Brass was effective and powerful with the choir presenting variations on just one word, Alleluia
John Birch, the Cathedral's former Master of Choristers made a welcomed return to conduct Bernstein's Chichester Psalms - a task he had previously undertaken at the UK premiere performance in 1965.
It was an exciting and exhilarating performance with the counter tenor solo in the second psalm expertly sung by Nicholas Pepin.
A remarkable and tender version of the short but beautiful Cantata 118 by Johann Sebastian Bach was sensitively given by the Choir with excellent accompaniment by Mark Wardell, Cathedral Assistant Organist.
