REVIEW: Chichester Chamber Concerts Emily Bauer-Jones: contralto; Terence Allbright: piano, Assembly Room.

The second recital of Chichester Chamber Concerts' 4th season was instantly transformed into an incandescent event as two distinctive musical personalities began to merge their astonishing skills – perhaps creating one of the most vibrant musical duos yet to be seen or heard in Chichester!

The elegantly poised contralto, Emily Bauer-Jones, was not just accompanied by a resolute pianist. Both she and Terence Allbright combined their supreme artistic abilities with stylish interpretation, while presenting a wide-ranging musical programme that blended the spirit of melodic tradition with exotic Spanish folksong.

They straightaway demonstrated their poetic harmony and balance with an animated presentation of Henry Purcell's Four Songs, moving on to an even more expressive union of music, poetry, romance and sorrow when performing the emotional Frauenliebe und Leben, by Schumann.

Next came English musical poetry, as this imaginative pair presented Elgar's vivacious Four Songs with all the lyrical intensity that they deserve.

The proceedings were even further enlivened when Terence Allbright adapted himself dramatically to some inventive solo piano music from the early twentieth century, written by the Russian composer, Nikolai Medtner – here performed with great skill and enthusiasm.

Both artists returned once more to the stage with their grand finale, now concentrating on colourful Spanish folk music. The popular Spanish composer, Manuel de Falla, is world-renowned for his fusion of passion with tuneful modernity in a great deal of acclaimed ballet music and the intense creativity of his Seven Popular Spanish Songs was convincingly portrayed here with rhythmic splendour and dynamic artistry.
