A total blast from first to last, Dreamboats And Petticoats offers a couple of hours of unalloyed joy = great, great music served up by a terrific cast of actor-musicians.
It’s all too easy to feel a little suspicious of manufactured musicals, the ones shoe-horned around a bunch of well-known songs that are already out there.
But Dreamboats delivers the goods with huge energy and enthusiasm.
The songs gathered together on the multi-million selling albums Dreamboats And Petticoats One, Two, Three and Four are the starting point; an engaging plot featuring lots of youngsters in a youth club does the rest.
Let’s Dance, To Know Him Is To Love Him, Shaking All Over, Bobby’s Girl, Little Town Flirt and Only Sixteen are among the numbers that just keep on coming, all of them nicely slotted in, never seeming forced and each and every one blissfully familiar.
In between, all the characters are nicely drawn as we relive all those Grease-style agonies of attraction and rejection, of fancying and going unrequited.
Stand-out performances from everyone had the audience on their feet for a final-ten-minutes party finale - a crowning moment at the end of the most winning of evenings.
