Military team to attempt own 'epic feat' at festival
With the chance to see a military team getting a little exhaust-ed and tyre-d carrying a car up Goodwood Hill or spot 12 runners attempting to break a world record by running on treadmills, this year's Festival of Speed promises to be something quite spectacular.
Thousands from around the globe will be attending the three-day festival at Goodwood which starts tomorrow.
Visitors can marvel at the stunning centrepiece for this year's festival, where a sculpture of two cars racing towards the sky on a track which towers above Goodwood House, thanks to the vision of artist Jerry Juddah.
Many fantastic and awesome events await you at the festival.
A military team will try to carry a car up the steep Goodwood Hill on foot as a gaggle of supercars drive up the 1.16-mile hill-climb.
And Porsche aims to break a new Guinness World Record at Goodwood when 12 runners attempt to cover the longest distance in 48 hours using treadmills.
This record attempt will take place up on the Porsche activity field and is being organised by the Porsche Human Performance Centre.
During the festival cult American television star Jesse James will be thrilling the Forest Rally Stage crowds in his wild 'Trophy Truck'.
And if that doesn't rev your engine, the British Forces Foundation's Lap of Honour Mini autographed by celebrities is to be auctioned by Bonhams to raise money for the charity tomorrow.
Celebrities who have autographed the car include Sir Michael Caine, Sir Jackie Stewart, Rod Stewart, Lewis Hamilton, Kate Moss, Joe Calzaghe, Sir Elton John, David Beckham, Sir Paul McCartney and many more.
Alongside the money raised at auction, a minimum of 50 selected major British brand names are being asked to donate 1,000 as a pledge of support to the men and women of the armed forces.
The theme for the 17th edition of the festival is 'True Grit – Epic Feats of Endurance'.
It celebrates the drive and determination of motor racing's heroes, who overcame huge physical, mental and mechanical barriers in their quest for glory.
A record 120 drivers and riders will be present at the 2009 Festival, reigning World Champions Lewis Hamilton in F1, Sebastien Loeb in WRC, plus the current F1 World Championship leader Jenson Button.
A who's who of motorcycle riders and bikes will be in attendance at Goodwood, with huge names such as Troy Corser, Mick Doohan, Max Biaggi and Phil Read set to entertain the Festival crowds.
More than 150,000 visitors are scheduled to visit the festival over the weekend and all grandstand seats, hospitality and camping places are already sold out, with only a handful of entrance tickets remaining on a first come, first served basis.
