A COUPLE had a narrow escape when their car burst into flames on the A23.

The driver was flagged down by other motorists after they spotted smoke coming out of his Vauxhall Astra yesterday (September 22) morning.

The car was destroyed in the blaze.

Firefighters from Hurstpierpoint, Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill were called to the scene and made the road safe.

Edward Bunn, of Hurstpierpoint Fire Station, said: "The Vauxhall Astra burst into flames and was destroyed. The people got out just in time."

The accident happened at 11.30am on the northbound carriageway between Hickstead and Bolney.

The road was closed for about half an hour.
