THE Chichester Society is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2013 and held its first celebration event a little early.

Last Wednesday two golden beech trees were planted in Jubilee Park, next to the newly opened New Park Centre.

Mayor Anne Scicluna and a host of well wishers were present for the planting.

David Wilson, treasurer to the society, said: “The society’s support for the New Park Centre goes back decades. Almost 40 years ago, the society vigorously campaigned to save the original building that at the time was threatened with demolition. Chichester Society member George Appleby was elected as the first chairman of the New Park Association in 1974.

“The society’s support continued with a fundraising campaign that turned New Park into the popular centre it has since become. That’s why there are two trees for a double celebration.”
