Julie Fellows, Mary-Ann Spindler and Liz Lawrence spent the 24 hours chatting for charity.

Their non-stop vocal efforts ensured at least £1,000 was raised for the Sussex Snowdrop Trust. This was double the initial target, to their delight.

Their talkathon took place at the Gordon Centre in Canada Grove between 5pm last Wednesdayand 5pm last Thursday.

As the final minutes ticked away, Aldwick resident Julie (62) said: "It's been absolutely brilliant. The time has gone so quickly. We've had lots of visitors, text messages and phone calls."

Mary-Ann (48) said: "We thought the hardest time would be between midnight and 4am. But, all of a sudden, it was light and we had not stopped talking."

Liz (46), of North Bersted, stated: "We have laughed and we have cried – and we've also learnt to talk and eat at the same time with dignity."

Topics of conversation included themselves, friends, families and holidays. Words flowed so smoothly only three items in a box of 15 taken along to provoke comments when silence loomed needed to be touched.

All three of the women kept the talking going throughout the entire day. The only exceptions came when one of them needed a comfort break.

Adjudicators from the centre ensuredthe chatter was non-stop to justify the sponsorship.

One of the Sussex Snowdrop Trust's founders, Diane Levantine, called in to support the women and tell them about its work with 164 seriousl-ill children and their families.

"Spending 24 hours talking is nothing to what those families are going through," added Julie.
