Sir Alan Sugar's TV search for an apprentice may be over, but a popular scheme leading to a career in civil engineering is returning to West Sussex.
The county council is offering three people the chance to go on a trainee technician scheme to learn about a wide range of highway-related functions, including maintenance, accident prevention and street lighting. A day-release BTech national certifi
cate in civil engineering will also be funded.
"TravelWise schemes that aim to reduce congestion and pollution will also be a feature of the apprenticeship, as well as learning about the development and delivery of transport policies," said a county council spokesman.
The course would be based at County Hall, Chichester, and the county council's highways area offices at Broadbridge Heath, near Horsham, Clapham, near Worthing, and Drayton, near Chichester. One day a week, trainees would be at Southampton City College.
The scheme has two entry levels:
* First-level entrants are required to have at least four GCSEs (or equivalent qualification) including English, maths and a science subject (at grade C or above) with an entry salary ranging from £12,678 to £13,336.
* Second-level entrants are required to have an additional A-level, preferably in maths or a science subject. The salary ranges from £14,197 to £14,882.
Gregory Merrett, who was a trainee on the first scheme four years ago, said: "I learned so much from this traineeship."
People interested in the trainee places can apply by going to the
