PRIMARY school pupils have been given a taste of professional cooking with a former head chef from the Ritz Hotel.

Birgit Gunz, a commercial baker from London, and Giles Thompson, owner of The Earl of March gastropub, in Lavant, and former Ritz Hotel executive head chef, held a taste session at North Mundham Primary School last Tuesday, January 27.

Michelle Atkins, the teaching assistant who help the class, said the pupils enjoyed wearing their chef’s whites and learning about healthy eating, hygiene and flavours.

The 30 children were taught about the anatomy of taste and how their tongues could differentiate between sweet, sour, salty and bitter. “Overall the experience was enjoyed by the children who listened carefully and participated fully,” said Mrs Atkins.

“They are looking forward to the next session on baking bread with Birgit next time.”

The sessions are being held as part of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts’ Chefs Adopt a School programme which sends chefs into schools to deliver food education to children.
