A campaign to gather more information on former and current armed forces personnel in the country’s next census in 2021 has been supported by the leader of West Sussex County Council.

Louise Goldsmith (Con, Chichester West) signed up to the Royal British Legion’s ‘Count Them In’ campaign, which is calling on the Government to include extra questions so it can build a clearer picture of servicemen and women to help direct care and support for them.

She said: “Our armed forces make an enormous contribution and we want to deliver the best services we can for current and former military personnel living in West Sussex.

“It is important we try to gain as much information about the armed forces community so ourselves, other public bodies such as health services, and charities can accurately identify areas of support.”

Nigel Peters (Con, Arundel and Wick), who is the county council’s military champion and is backing the campaign, added: “We made a commitment when we signed the Armed Forces Covenant in 2012 to support our armed forces and we absolutely stand by that.

“This campaign is important because it will help us develop a greater understanding of the needs, location and profile of the armed forces community in the county.”
