Students and staff at Birdham CE Primary School held a farewell ceremony for one of the school’s Willow trees which has been growing for about 70 years.

Headteacher Mark McCadden said the tree had to be felled as it had died.

“Everybody was very sad to see it go, and some of the children asked if we could say goodbye properly,” he said.

“So Mrs Quest and Mr McCadden, along with a small handful of children conducted a short service to say farewell.”

The group said a prayer and read a poem, and took a photo before it was cut down.

Mr McCadden said it will be replaced by a mature tree later this year
