ARSONISTS set fire to a derelict shipyard in Bosham on Bank Holiday Monday.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the blaze at the Old Burnes Shipyard had been started deliberately.

Two engines were sent from Chichester to deal with what was called a ‘small fire’ at just after 7pm, and within an hour the blaze had been extinguished.

Bosham resident Nigel Hogben snapped these pictures of smoke billowing from the buildings.

He said: “We could see the smoke coming from the buildings and blowing right across the channel.

“It was coming out thick black smoke because we were told by the firemen that tyres and wood had been set alight.

“They are very old buildings that I’m told have been empty for over 20 years and it’s all very derelict to look at.”

There are plans in place to develop the shipyard, which is located in the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
