Bracklesham wreck ‘at risk’ according to English Heritage

THE SHIPWRECK of a British warship is in danger of erosion, English Heritage has announced.

The organisation published its Heritage At Risk 2014 register this week with the Hazardous added to the list of heritage sites ‘at risk’.

The 54-gun British third rate warship was beached in Bracklesham Bay during a storm in 1706.

This year, licensed divers discovered it was at risk of being lost to the nation through ‘serious environmental threats’.

According to English Heritage: “The winter storms of 2013/14 have significantly reduced the layers of sand that were covering much of the wreck, exposing artefacts such as ship fixtures and fittings and armaments such as cannon trucks to increased deterioration and decay.”
