Caffe Nero denied permission for second shop in Chichester

Plans for Caffe Nero to open a second shop in South Street have been halted by the Chichester District Council, after permission to refit the vacant shop unit was refused last week.

The shop, which was to be the second branded by the chain in the city centre, was formerly occupied by fashion shop La Paloma.

Proposed changes to the shop front, including a new awning, and a complete refit of the shop inside were refused on the basis they would be harmful to the character of the building.

The decision notice read: “The proposed use is considered to result in the loss of a retail unit that would be harmful to the function, viability and vitality of the retail centre and so change of use is not considered permissible.

“As such the proposal constitutes unnecessary works harmful to the significant character of a listed building.”

The notice also detailed potential issues with the noise and ventilation impact on neighbouring properties as a result of the planned air conditioning units.
