A CITY sandwich shop bagged the top gong at a national industry awards, The Sammies.

Trevor and Cindy Webber were thrilled their business of 22 years, Serious Sandwich, was recognised as the ‘Independent Sandwich Bar of the Year’ by The British Sandwich Association.

The sandwich bar started out in Sadler’s Walk and moved to Baffins Court in 2011.

“For the award you have to be nominated by your customers, and then there is a secret shopper.

“We were shortlisted,” said Mr Webber.

Then after making the final six, the shop took the gold award.

Mr Webber said he was ‘delighted’.

“It is just great for the staff to be recognised in that way, to recognise their hard work,” he said.

“It is customer service, not just the sandwich.”

He said the reason the sandwiches were so good is because they are made fresh each day, with high-quality food, locally-sourced where possible.

“We do not carry anything over to the next day, we make everything ready to go,” he said.

“People are more concerned about what they eat now.”

Serious Sandwich has continued to thrive, despite a move from a visible shopping precinct in East Street, down to a more hidden away side street in Baffins Lane.

“We had a strong customer base,” he said.

“The customers came with us.”

After the win, the staff celebrated victory with a golden cake depicting the store’s best selling sandwich – the Chicken Licken, a delicious combination of chicken, bacon, avocado, lettuce and honey mustard mayonnaise.
