A new tattoo parlour has been given the thumbs up for Chichester despite an outpour of objections from residents claiming it will ‘damage the historical city’.

The plans will see the unit at 10 The Hornet change from retail use to mixed use of a tattoo studio and an art gallery which will run a ‘small art class’, following approval from Chichester District Council.

The gallery is planned for the front end of the first floor, with a second tattoo area located to the rear of the property, in addition to one on the ground floor.

However, the new addition to Chichester’s city centre has not been widely supported by residents.

Becca Arman said: “As a weekly visitor to Chichester, I was extremely concerned to see an application for yet another tattoo shop in Chichester.

“In a small radius we already have three well established but discrete tattoo shops in the city, I truly believe that by continuing to allow these premises to creep into the historical city that we are at risk of cheapening Chichester and impacting on our tourist trade which so many people rely on.”

She added: “Chichester is well known for its picturesque and historical sites and we seem to slowly losing that, leaving a bitter taste in local people’s mouths.”

Other residents agreed, adding that it would have a detrimental affect on the other tattoo parlours in the city.

Lindsey Bishop said: “No, no, no. Chichester is a historical town and should be treated as such.

“I understand that we need to move with the times and accommodate however we certainly do not need yet another tattoo parlour in our beautiful town.”

The shop unit, owned by Flude Commercial, was previously occupied by Picturehouse Photography.

Local reactions to the proposal have not been wholly negative, however, with some stating that the display of art will be a welcome addition to the city.

Keeley Pinnegar said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to bring art in to Chichester.

“How wonderful will this be to have an art gallery, have the option to participate in art classes and a tattoo studio all under one roof run by an extremely talented artist.

“This is definitely a must for Chichester, to bring art alive and reveal such amazing talent.”
