Philips axes 4,500 jobs

A major electronics firm with a base in Tangmere has announced it is axing 4.500 jobs.

Philips, a Dutch company which owns Philips Respironics in Chichester Business Park, City Fields Way. has revealed it is making thousands of people redundant at the same time as it announced a fall in profits.

The firm, the world’s leading lighting manufacturer, employs 116,000 people across the world, including 2,200 in the UK.

Of the 4,500 job cuts, 1,400 will go in the Netherlands but it is not yet known where the remaining 3,100 jobs will be lost.

As well as Philips Respironics, the company has UK bases in Guildford, Surrey and Hamilton, South Lanarkshire.
