A woman is lucky to be alive after a concrete fence post narrowly missed her head when she crashed her car into the side of a house in Funtington

The woman thought to be in her 70s was driving toward Chichester through Funtington when her car left the road and ploughed through a fence, and into the dining room of the cottage next to the Country Fayre village shop.

The first people on the scene described how a concrete fence post had smashed through the windscreen and missed the woman’s head by centimetres.

The homeowners, David and Lesley Harris were in their conservatory when it happened at around 1.30pm today, Wednesday January 19.

They said they would have been in their dining room if it had been raining but were having their lunch enjoying the sunshine in the conservatory when it happened.

Mrs Harris, 58, said: “We were sitting in the conservatory having lunch, then we heard this terrific noise.

“We rushed into the house and the car was stuck in dining room with everything falling down.

“Everything is ruined.

“If we had been been sat in the dining room table she would have driven right into us. We would have been sitting right where the car went through.

“If it had been a rainy day we would have been sat there, but as it was sunny we were in the conservatory, she would have killed us.”

The fire and rescue services cut the woman free from the Nissan Almera, and she was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
