DRAMATIC pictures show the moment a car caught fire in the Chichester Gate car park yesterday (July 10).
Firefighters extinguished the flames which erupted from the engine of the blue Volkswagen, which was parked in the middle of the car park.
A spokeswoman from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters received eight or nine calls around 4.45pm all reporting the blaze.
The fire started accidentally, but the owner was nowhere to be seen.
The car was severely damaged and was left with the Chichester Gate security team.
One eyewitness, who took the photos but did not wish to be named, said: “I saw a little bit of smoke but didn’t take a lot of notice of it at first and then from there it got more and more and as you can see from the first photo that’s it.
“Two security guards came with fire extinguishers but they didn’t go near the fire when it started to take hold like that and then the fire brigade turned up.”
