AN ANIMAL charity has said the number of unwanted animals it is being asked to take has reached unprecedented levels.

Volunteers at the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre, based in Sidlesham, have been inundated with phone calls from people who no longer want to look after their cats, kittens and rabbits.

The charity’s founder, Monique Turk, said the situation was the worst it had ever been. “Last week on one single day I was asked to take in 30 animals,” she said.

“I have never known it this bad in the 25 years since we opened the rescue centre.

“The problem is we can only take in animals where we have room for them – and the simple fact is we are being asked to take in ten times more than we have homes for.

“We have rabbits which have been resident here for two years and kittens which are now six months old.

“We are struggling to cope and getting to the point where we are having to turn animals away.”

Anyone whou like to rehome a pet can call 01243 641409 or visit the centre’s website.
