A FAMILY business hit by the flooding earlier this year is starting to recover after months of hard work.
The Chichester Bedroom Centre, in Main Road, Bosham, was left knee-deep in water during the summer floods which closed the A27 and saw homes and businesses coping with a sudden deluge of water.
The family-run firm saw its ground floor devastated after the unseasonal weather and was striving for months to get the showroom back to its previous state.
In the last month, the showroom has fully reopened.
Geoff Bass runs the business with his son, Jon, and daughter, Pip.
“We’re a family business, we’ve been trading in Bosham for 18 years and the flood had a terrible impact,” said Mr Bass.
“The showroom was waterlogged, it took weeks to dry out and we needed new electrics.
“It wasn’t even as if the showroom needed a refit – we’d invested in our expansion and had a comprehensive revamp a few years ago.”
However, Mr Bass decided to turn the negatives of the flooding into positives.
“We’ve turned it into an opportunity to bring in new ranges,” he said.
“We now have new flooring and we’ve restocked the ground floor showroom with a fantastic new collection of beds and bedroom furniture.”
Across the road, the White Swan Inn, also devastated by the floods earlier this year, has now reopened.
Last week, the Environment Agency launched a four-week campaign to raise public awareness of flood risks in Sussex.
The campaign aims to educate people on how to find out if homes or businesses are in a flood risk area, how to minimise damage to properties and what the Environment Agency is doing to reduce the threat of flooding.
Flood and coastal risk manager Andrew Gilham said: “By working closely with local and well-trusted organisations in Sussex, such as the police and fire service, we are able to communicate more effectively with homeowners at risk of flooding.
“We are committed to strengthening our partnerships in order to ensure the wider public are fully informed about their flood risk and what they can do to minimise damage to their properties.”
