Chichester dad’s cycle challenge raises thousands

A DETERMINED dad raised £7,200 with friends by a cycle ride to Paris for the Chichester Families Diabetes Group.

On Thursday, July 10, 12 friends set off on a 400km cycle ride from St Richard’s Hospital to Paris. Ben Surr, 38, from West Wittering, organised the event to raise money after his son Sebastian was diagnosed with type-one diabetes two years ago.

Seb was just nine months old when the illness was detected and both Ben and his wife Jo, 40, were devastated.

“When Seb was first rushed into hospital, it was safe to say the experts were unsure he would make it through the night,” said Ben.

“That news crushed both Jo and I.”

After 11 days in hospital, Seb was allowed home and both Ben and Jo had to adapt to a whole new life: “The support we received from the Chichester Families Diabetes Group and the hospital helped us through the initial shock and continues to help today.”

He convinced 12 friends to join him in the ride to raise money for items not available on the NHS. The group completed the 255-mile ride in three days.

“We are proud of what we have achieved and look forward to the next challenge,” Ben said.
