A CHICHESTER man who has turned his life around with help from The Prince’s Trust has been honoured at a royal awards ceremony.

Darren, 25, was named runner-up for the Flying Start Award at The Prince’s Trust and L’Oréal Paris Celebrate Success Awards last Thursday.

The award recognises young people who have overcome barriers, transformed their lives and moved into sustainable employment.

Darren said: “I feel like I’ve come so far and can’t thank the trust enough for their support.”

At 16, Darren left school with very few qualifications. At 20, he found himself unemployed and homeless.

Darren hit a low point when he found himself sleeping in a storage shed at a local church for two months in the middle of winter. Feeling hopeless and depressed, he was unemployed for eight months before he heard about The Prince’s Trust Get into Maritime course, which helps unemployed young people gain the skills and confidence to move into work or training. He is now working as a sailing instructor.
