Chichester’s MP has backed the remain campaign in the run up to the EU referendum, according to national reports.
Up until now Andrew Tyrie has not divulged which campaign he would endorse, but as chairman of the Treasury Select Committee he has been highly critical of both sides, suggesting an ‘arms race of ever more lurid claims and counter-claims’ was not only confusing the public it was ‘impoverishing political debate’.
Writing for The Times today, Mr Tyrie said the referendum would be ‘down to people’s judgment on a balance of arguments’, and he believed it boiled down to the economy, identity and security.
He argued that any control post-Brexit would be ‘illusory’, while the EU has made an ‘enormous contribution to the stability of Europe’.
Although the leave campaign might have the simpler points, he felt that the remainers had ‘the better of the arguments’.
Mr Tyrie’s office has been approached for comment.
