A part of Chichester was restored today when Chichester’s mayor returned the weathervane to the top of the market cross.

After climbing the heights of the monument Cllr Budge said: “It is absolutely marvellous to be here on the top of this 500 year old structure to mark the reinstating of the weathervane.”

Ian Harris, 82, was also part of the special as he painted the original weathervane in 1971, as well as the one placed at the top of the cross this week.

He said: “It has been an absolutely wonderful experience, I am really pleased to be able to paint it again.”

Peter Robert, property manager at Chichester City Council said: “It has been a few years since the weathervane has been in position.

“It is a big day for the city for it to go back up – Chichester has its weathervane again.”
