A NONAGENARIAN got an unusual present for her birthday – free gym membership.

Madge Lambert may be celebrating her 90th birthday but she still makes time for her regular circuit class at Westgate Leisure, Chichester.

Madge, from Selsey, is one of the centre’s most regular and longest serving members of the Active for Health scheme.

She has been taking part in circuit classes run by Tina Scutt every week for ten years to keep up her fitness levels.

On her milestone birthday, staff surprised Madge with one month’s free membership and a bouquet of flowers.

“I really enjoy coming to the classes,” she said. “We do cycling, trampolining, rowing, step ups, weights and walking. I do feel it is doing me good.

“I also enjoy the social side of coming here as we do have a good laugh in the class. I am sure it has kept me going and my daughters encourage me to keep up the classes.”

Madge’s husband Basil is also 90 and swims 30 lengths every time he visits the centre.

Active for Health helps people increase their exercise levels. It is designed to make physical activity easily accessible to people who would normally find it difficult to take part.

Those taking part have been referred by their doctor, physiotherapist or health professional.
