A HIGH-end car garage has been warned after bulldozing an area of green land without permission.

Planning enforcement officers from Chichester District Council visited the Mercedes Benz garage, situated on the A259 at Colworth, last week.

The manager said he did not realise planning permission was needed and that the Ridgeway Group, which owns the franchise, would be submitting one ‘imminently’.

Daniel Stone said insufficient on-site parking space meant staff were currently clogging up a narrow road behind. He said: “I’ve had a couple of local residents come and speak to me, but we never intended to upset anyone, we were trying to do something good for the local area.”

Oving Parish Council chairman Sjoerd Schuyleman however said the garage had previously tried to build a carpark without permission, albeit ten years ago under different ownership.

“I’d be gobsmaked if anyone working there didn’t know what had happened previously.
It’s happened at least twice before and it’s flagrant, personally it annoys me.”

Chichester District Council’s planning enforcement team visited on Wednesday, February 25. A statement said: “The manager said the area was being cleared because it had become overgrown but had not realised any permission was needed to turn it into a car park. The manager was advised planning permission was required to change the use of the land, and was asked to stop any work on the land... which the manager agreed to do.”
