A POPULAR 91-year-old has taken the plunge in a newly-refurbished swimming pool opened by an Olympic sailor.

Michiko Dodd joined Sarah Ayton, who won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, for the opening of the pool at Harbour Way Country Club in West Wittering.

Sarah presented a surprise lifetime honorary membership gold medal to Michiko, who has been swimming at the club nearly every day since the 1970s.

Owner Mandy Keat said: “It was a fabulous event.

“Michi was totally surprised by the medal, she really wasn’t expecting it.

“She swims with us every day and was quite overwhelmed.

“It was really lovely. Michi swam and did some lengths of the pool.

“It was a massive refurbishment. It is a big relief for it all to be up and running again.

“We were really pleased to have
Sarah opening the pool for us.”

Both guests were presented with a bouquet of flowers.
